Rice cereal--part 2 (& 3)

On Monday, we tried feeding Hannah rice cereal for the 2nd time. She did much better this time. She didn't cry, and she actually swallowed some of it. But she definitely didn't love it.

Oh, no. Not again.

Maybe if I look them in the eye, they won't torture me.

No such luck.

What do you know--it still tastes nasty.

Seriously gross.

I think I'm going to be sick...

Ah, that's much better. These fingers are delicious!

Our 3rd try was last night (no pics taken), and Hannah didn't seem nearly as annoyed and ate quite a bit more. Maybe she's getting used to it. Or maybe she's just giving in.

We really need to try to feed our Sweet Pea some sweet peas. :)

Easter Chick

The Easter Bunny visited us early Saturday morning.

Hannah got her first Easter basket:
Somehow the Easter Bunny knew that Hannah needed a pacifier holder and a feeding chair. He also brought some of Hannah's parents' favorite candy for her to share with them. Nice.

This adorable Easter Chick was happy with it all.

Ok, fine. She was really a duck, but Easter Chick sounds cuter.

Hannah wasn't so sure about the outfit at times.

Most of Hannah's cousins on my side were there for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Fun times!

Hannah found quite a few eggs, thanks to the help of her daddy.

And her mommy.

The Easter Chick with the Easter Bunny.

Hannah enjoyed sucking on her fingers while watching all her cousins.

"Hmmmmm. I wonder if that candy tastes better than my fingers..."

I took a few pics of Hannah in her Easter dress on Sunday morning:

What a super cute baby!

We enjoyed Easter dinner with my parents and grandma.

Four maternal generations--Great-Grandma Meservy, Grandma Clayson, Mommy Carter, and Hannah.

We hope you all had a fabulous Easter! We are so grateful for our Savior--His life, His atonement, and His resurrection. What a blessing it is to have His love and His example!

4 months!

Hannah turned 4 months old today! It was a busy day for her. This morning we took her out for her first professional pictures. She did really well, but she couldn't keep her hands out of her mouth long enough to get a good smile going. I still think she looked absolutely adorable.

After getting pictures taken, we took a field trip to Scott's work for Hannah to meet his co-workers. By the time we got home, Hannah was zonked:

What a cute, sleepy baby.

But wait--there's more! This afternoon, Hannah and I met Scott at Hannah's 4-month well child checkup. Hannah now weighs 12 lbs 5oz (22nd percentile), is 24 inches long (41st percentile), and has a head circumference of 16 1/2 inches (76th percentile). So she continues to be of average height, skinny, and blessed with her mommy's big head. :) Hannah's pediatrician gave her a clean bill of health. As soon as her surgeon gives her a clean bill of health at her appointment next week, I might start to actually believe it.

Hannah is growing steadily and developing on schedule. Her pediatrician recommended that we start trying to introduce her to solid foods. So we went out and bought rice cereal for her to try tonight. She didn't exactly love it...

Hmmmm, I wonder what that is...

Um, I'm not so sure about this stuff.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! What in the world have you done to me?!? (Sad but hilarious!)

How could you trick me like that?!?

I know. I'll just spit it out like I spit out my medicine.

Take that! :)

I guess we'll wait a few days and try again. Maybe she'll like green beans or sweet peas a little better.

Scott and I absolutely love our 4-month-old baby girl! She is the light in our life, and we just enjoy her so much. She has been "talking" tons these past few days, and it totally melts our hearts!

Top 4 things I currently love about Hannah:
1- Her smiles. There's absolutely nothing cuter in this world! I love how her eyes sparkle and her entire face lights up. There is so much love behind her smiles.
2- Her voice. She has the sweetest, cutest scruffy voice ever. You'd think she was a smoker. :)
3- Her eyes. They are big, blue, and beautiful, and she has her daddy's long lashes. Hannah is so aware of everything around her, and she can immediately find me no matter where I am or how quiet I am trying to be.
4- Her sweet personality. I love how smart and sassy she is. But I also love that she is the sweetest thing I have ever snuggled with. There is nothing as sweet as cuddling her on my chest/shoulder when she falls asleep there. Love it!
Honorable mention--Those amazingly delicious chubby cheeks!

I love my sweet baby Hannah!!!

What a difference a year makes!

One year ago today, we were shocked to see this:

And today we were blessed to spend the day with this sweet baby:

Hannah enjoyed sucking on her car seat strap and "talking" while Scott and I enjoyed the Carl Bloch exhibit at the BYU Art Museum.

Our first family-of-three outing to BYU.

We also got to spend a few hours with these fabulous people:

Thanks for the visit, Melus & fam!

It's amazing to think back to a year ago. I thought I had an idea about how much my life would change, but I didn't really expect to be so madly in love with my daughter just a year later. It's been a crazy journey, but I wouldn't change a thing. All of our trials have brought me and Scott closer together and helped us appreciate Hannah even more. We are so blessed!

Naptime

Two weeks ago, I decided that Hannah needed a nap routine. Poor baby had never learned how to take real naps, thanks mostly to her adoring, paranoid parents.

When Hannah first got home from the hospital, all she did was sleep (apparently due to lack of oxygen). And she could sleep anywhere--in our arms, in her bassinet, in her car seat, in crazy-loud family gatherings, literally anywhere.

When Hannah got home from the hospital the 2nd time, she didn't sleep nearly as much during the day. And we thoroughly enjoyed that. We never even thought of putting her down for a nap. If she happened to fall asleep in our arms, we'd let her nap there. Occasionally, I would put Hannah down to make a quick trip to the bathroom, but I never put her down for an actual nap. I never wanted to let her out of my sight--I was pretty much terrified that she would quit breathing again. Sure, I didn't get much done because I was almost always holding Hannah, but I really didn't mind. I certainly didn't have anything more important to do. That lasted for about a month or so. And then I started having serious back muscle spasms (a clue that I wasn't taking care of myself very well). It got so bad that for about a week I didn't dare carry Hannah anywhere for fear that I would collapse and drop her. I basically just held her on the couch all day, and that certainly did not help my back. But I soon went to the doctor and got on meds to fix my back problem.

But another problem had been occurring for weeks. Hannah had been having overtired meltdowns almost every evening. Apparently, she wasn't getting enough sleep during the day. Her naps were too often interrupted by my need to cough or talk or fidget or whatever.

So I pulled out a book that I had meant to read before Hannah arrived--"Secrets of the Baby Whisperer"--and I went right to the chapter on sleep. I loved the author's middle-of-the-road approach. I knew that Scott and I were too big of softies to ever let Hannah cry herself to sleep, but I also knew that we couldn't hold her to get her to sleep for the rest of her life. I won't go into detail about the baby whisperer's approach, but the gist of it is that you have a sleep routine (NOT a schedule) and you teach babies that they can be independent and fall asleep on their own in their beds. And when they cry, you respond to their cries, as opposed to rescuing them.

I really liked the philosophy behind this approach, and I immediately started using it 2 weeks ago. The first few days were pretty rough, especially for Scott. (He was on board at first but later had a few choice words for the baby whisperer and then eventually became supportive again.) Scott's just a total softy, and Hannah knows this. Thus, she cries harder for him and smiles more at him to try to get out of naptime. It's usually pretty darn cute and funny.

Anyway, Hannah has definitely gotten better at this nap thing (she has always been a great night sleeper), although some days are better than others. Overall, she is sleeping more during the day and is happier throughout the day and evening. And no matter how much she resists when I first try to put her to bed, I think she secretly likes her naps.

Just look:

This is her first real nap ever. Doesn't she look so relaxed and happy? I don't think she misses her baby burrito days at all.

Hannah's latest favorite sleeping position is turning her head and tilting it back 90 degrees. She's kind of a weirdy.

And she's super duper cute!

I'm feeling pretty good that my baby can learn some independence while still feeling loved and slightly spoiled. :)

Fluke

A few days ago, Hannah forgot that she hates Tummy Time and actually smiled for a minute or two. Super cute!

It was definitely just a fluke. :)

Me Time

So I haven't had much "me time" since having Hannah. I guess if you count work as me time, I get a few hours every Thursday evening (and occasionally on Tuesday evenings when I sub). Or if you count running errands, I sometimes get a couple hours on Saturdays. I have also made considerably brief appearances at a birthday party, a housewarming party, and a dinner party. But I hadn't had any pampering me time until today. And it was nice.

I spent the afternoon in Salt Lake with a couple of good friends from my childhood. We were celebrating Emily's birthday. We ate lunch at good ol' Sconecutter (not pictured). Then we got spa pedicures. Oh, so relaxing.

Me, Emily, and Candace. Good times.

Too bad it was so cold and snowy. I need some good weather so that I can show off my cute toes.

I'm glad Scott is such a good dad. I never have to worry about Hannah when he's with her. She loves her daddy!

Hannah's Happy Places

We discovered early on Hannah's first happy place--the changing table. She's especially happy there first thing in the morning (or in the middle of the night). Hannah's smiles make it a joy for this non-morning person to wake up so early.

I took these pics over a month ago.

I don't know how Scott and I managed to create a morning person.

Who wouldn't melt with this early-morning smile?

Love her!

Hannah's 2nd happy place was discovered soon after the first. She loves her mobile! It is my baby-sitter when I need to get ready. It's perfect because she is so loud cooing at it and kicking her legs that I can hear her from my room. I just have to go in every few minutes to wind it again (and to make absolutely sure she is still breathing).

I took these pics about 6 weeks ago. She looks so tiny!

Gotta love those ladybugs.

We discovered Hannah's 3rd happy place the night before her last surgery. She loves to lie on her back and watch tv. We try not to let her do this too much, but it's pretty cute.
She gets pretty mad if you block her view of the tv. Funny!

What do all 3 happy places have in common? They all allow Hannah to be on her back with the control to look around at whatever she wants to see. She is really curious and always observing her surroundings. We love our trying-to-become-more-independent baby!

Let me tell ya, her cheeks are absolutely delicious!

Exercise Schmexercise?

I was blessed to be able to exercise regularly throughout my pregnancy (minus a 3-week doctor-ordered break early on). Since having Hannah, my exercise has mainly consisted of pacing hospital halls, nursing a cute baby, and occasional sit-ups during Hannah's Tummy Time. Fortunately, Hannah's health and the beautiful weather last weekend have made it possible to start taking walks. Hooray! I took Hannah out on Friday (and today), and Scott joined us for our first family walk on Saturday. Special. :)

Hannah was thrilled to be outside. :) Poor little hermit baby doesn't love the sun. But she does love her stroller, and it puts her to sleep every time. Nice.

Scott and I love getting out and showing off our cute baby.

Yay for better weather! And yay for exercise!

**FYI: As of today, Hannah weighs 11 lbs. 13 1/2 oz. Almost 12 pounds!
